The 22 cards of life's great journey
The 22 Major Arcana cards are sometimes called "the Fool's journey" — they tell the story of a soul moving from innocence (the Fool, card 0) to enlightenment (the World, card 21). Each card is a chapter, a stage in the journey we all take.
You can group the Majors into three stages of seven cards each:
The Magician through the Chariot. Here we learn to navigate the visible world: willpower, intuition, structure, love, victory. We meet authority figures — the Empress (mother), Emperor (father), Hierophant (teacher).
Strength through Temperance. Here the journey turns inward. We meet our own power (Strength), withdraw to find wisdom (Hermit), face fate (Wheel of Fortune), accept consequences (Justice), surrender (Hanged Man), die and transform (Death), and find balance (Temperance).
The Devil through the World. The final stage is about confronting our shadow (Devil), surviving sudden change (Tower), regaining hope (Star), facing our fears (Moon), embracing joy (Sun), being reborn (Judgement), and finally completing the journey (the World).
When a Major Arcana appears in a reading, it usually points to a major theme or turning point in your life — not a small daily concern. If most of your reading is Majors, the situation is significant. If most are Minors, it is everyday.
Major cards often answer the question "what is the deeper meaning here?" rather than "what should I do tomorrow?"
In Module 3, we will explore the 56 Minor Arcana cards and how they handle the practical, day-to-day side of life.
